Industry-Backed Energy Training Program Gains Traction Across Western Canada

Looks to expand across Canada: Sponsorship opportunities available

A skills training program preparing young adults for a career in energy is seeing higher-than-expected enrolment.

geoLOGIC systems’ Sustainability in Energy® Micro-Credential (SEMC) for Students addresses topics such as emissions management, energy security, regulatory compliance, and Indigenous relations.

Since the SEMC launch in May 2025, more than 570 learners from over 40 universities, colleges, and polytechnics across the country have registered for the program. The institutions with the most registrations are University of Alberta, University of Calgary, Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, Simon Fraser University, and University of British Columbia.

Bemal Mehta, geoLOGIC’s Managing Director, Energy Intelligence, said the overwhelming early response is a clear indication that young adults are interested in pursuing a career in energy.

“Many students are looking to supplement their formal education with industry-specific training, and the SEMC’s no-cost format has made it an accessible option.”

Looking at the numbers, 62% of learners are based in Alberta, a province closely tied to the energy industry. British Columbia accounts for 27% of learners, a strong showing from a province traditionally less associated with energy-sector training. Six per cent of learners are based in Saskatchewan, while the remaining 5% come from other provinces.

“We believe the program is filling a critical role in preparing todays and tomorrow’s energy workforce,” said Mehta. “Young adults are seeing that Canada’s evolving energy sector offers excellent career opportunities.”

Industry-backed program

The program is sponsored by Pathways Alliance, an alliance of six of Canada’s largest oilsands producers.

Mehta says that outreach has been central to raising awareness about the training program.

“Sponsorship enables direct outreach to post-secondaries in western Canada,” he said.

“The strong response in Alberta, B.C., and Saskatchewan shows that targeted outreach translates into meaningful amounts of enrolment.”

Jennifer Welsh, Program Manager, Learning, said industry sponsorship has been essential in making the program free and widely available in western Canada.

“Industry sees the real value in supporting this program for a future-ready workforce while advancing shared goals around innovation and sustainability,” said Welsh. “Strong enrolment reflects the value of this model, and we’re actively exploring sponsorship to fund expansion into other provinces, including Ontario and Québec.”
