Carbon Markets Explained: Comprehensive Course On Compliance And Voluntary Markets
A new course delves into carbon commodities trading, offering insights into global compliance and voluntary carbon markets.
Jackson Hegland, president of advisory firm Modern West, will deliver Carbon Markets Explained, a course tailored for the oil and gas sector, on January 23, 2025.
This three-hour session will cover the basics of carbon commodities, the complexities of current and emerging carbon markets, the process for generating credits, and insights into how to maximize the value of carbon credits.
“A course like this comes in handy because you can start to understand what the opportunities are for your organization, regardless of whether you're in a regulated market or whether you have an opportunity to capitalize on what's happening in the voluntary markets,” said Hegland.
Using case studies, Hegland will pull examples from small and large oil and gas projects that generate different volumes of carbon credits in both compliance and voluntary markets.
One of the challenges that companies have with carbon markets is ensuring their carbon assets from an emissions mitigation project are durable enough to maintain value over the long-term.
“We talk to companies all over the world,” said Hegland. “They often think they have carbon assets as a result of certain project investments. But without a comprehensive understanding of market dynamics the pathway to credit generation can be bumpy. Understanding what it takes to create that asset is going to be the most important takeaway from this course.”
Carbon markets play a significant role in promoting investment into clean technologies and the deployment of the technologies in the field, particularly in the oil and gas sector.
Hegland said the course will help people understand how their organization can generate carbon commodities and how to maximize the value of those assets.
“Carbon markets evolve almost on a daily basis,” said Hegland. “It really creates a financial incentive that in many cases is required to make the projects economic. Carbon markets are a critical piece of capital investment strategies as companies pursue their decarbonization objectives. And in the coming years, these markets will only become more significant as the global landscape clarifies how carbon commodities can move across borders.”
This course is for anyone who works for a company that can generate carbon commodities from investment in their current asset base or works for an organization that has an ESG or sustainability goal around net zero or the carbon intensity of their product.
The live course is scheduled for Thursday, January 23, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. MT. via ZOOM.
